The story takes place in an alternate America, where the last acceptable form of prejudice – discrimination against people who are perceived as less intelligent – is being eradicated.
“Women Behind the Wheel” explains how the car became a gendered technology. Author Nancy Nichols says that for men, cars mean adventure, power, and strength. For women, it's doing housework. There was also a prototype minivan equipped with a washer and dryer.
