What happens when engineers and composers collaborate with artificial intelligence to create music?
With the theme of “blue rainy day”, algorithm engineer Gao Yuejie and composer Zhu Xuzhi created a completely different sound. Gao created it with the help of his AI, and Zhu using only his own skills and knowledge. Mr. Zhu, who is also a pianist, played both pieces, and while he played, he rearranged and enriched the AI-composed piece.
The composer said that AI could be “both friend and competition for artists like me,” but the engineer believed that “true inspiration still comes from the artist.”
Thursday's performance served as a preview for “Digi Muse – 2024 Music+Technology Festival” to be held at Shanghai Concert Hall.

Held in March and April, the festival features four concerts selected from more than 100 submissions from around the world, two Asian premieres by Berlin-based music-theater ensemble Nico and the Navigators, and Forum , workshops, etc.
The festival has also invited five renowned musicians as artist ambassadors to evaluate, guide and recommend selected works. The ambassador is Chinese composer Yu Yang. German violinist Daniel Hopp. Chinese-American composer and conductor Huang Luo. Chinese composer and producer Chen Zhiyi is best known for composing the Genshin soundtrack. Gabriel Prokofiev is a British composer and DJ.
Fan Jing, general manager of the concert hall, said: “The development of digital technology will inevitably be applied to artistic innovation and performance.”
“The aim of the festival is to showcase the great innovations that come from collaborations between musicians and scientists, and hopefully explore the different ways in which technology can empower art and art can enrich technology. .”
The concert hall put out a call for such collaborations in December 2023, and received 102 entries from around the world, including works by multinational teams. Five artist ambassadors have selected four works of various styles and genres to be performed in April.
This also includes jazz concerts that bridge classical music and Chinese folk elements. A modern digital remake of Quanzhou Nanyin, one of the oldest existing musical forms in China and known as a “living fossil” of Chinese music history. The festival will include a special performance by Nico and the Navigators, one of Europe's most important independent music theater ensembles and famous for its “staging concerts” that have developed an extraordinary new approach to musical compositions. Also included are two published works.
