Next up is Corey Hulen, Chief Technology Officer at Mattermost and a finalist in the Private and Public Chief Technology Officer category. Here, he shares his major accomplishments, future focus areas, career advice, and more.
What were your key achievements in 2023?
In 2023, I took on the role of leading Mattermost's Small Business Innovation Research Program, driving innovation and supporting the creation of new mission-critical ChatOps capabilities for our secure collaboration platform. Throughout the year, I worked with my team to develop and test features for four active contracts. One of them was officially completed in March of this year, delivering custom ChatOps features such as message prioritization, acknowledgments, and persistent notifications. Additionally, we have built several key partnerships across the public and private sectors to support the development of custom capabilities for future real-time mission-critical collaborations.
In addition to the successful development and launch of new custom capabilities, the biggest accomplishment of the past year came from the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command's use of custom ChatOps capabilities as part of the Mobility Guardian 2023 exercise. AMC's use of ChatOps to coordinate operations across the nearly 13 million square mile Indo-Pacific training range underscored the importance of real-time, secure collaboration that we strive to enable.
What are your key areas of focus going forward and why are they so important to your mission?
As technology continues to evolve and impact mission operations, our continued efforts to accelerate decision-making superiority, autonomous collaboration, and out-of-band incident response help the world's most critical organizations. plays a role in supporting agility and resilience.
Specifically, we are constantly seeking innovative ways to help military members overcome challenges with fast and secure communications. That's why Mattermost remains focused on delivering new and innovative capabilities to accelerate mission-critical work, and we will pursue new partnerships and R&D grants to advance this plan.
What is your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
My advice is to be passionate about technology and think about how you can apply it to solving real-world problems. A great way to do this is to start contributing to open source software communities and projects to share your work, meet other like-minded people, and grow your network.
Fun fact: What is something most people don't know about you?
Outside of my work at Mattermost, I love spending time outdoors hiking, backpacking, and fishing. I especially enjoy tenkara fishing, a type of fly fishing that originated in Japan and is practiced in remote alpine lakes and streams.
