D.C. has topped Forbes' list of Best and Worst Tech States for 2024. According to Forbes, 7.06% of D.C.'s workforce is employed in high-tech fields, the highest percentage in the country. D.C. also has some of the highest-paid tech workers in the country, with an average annual salary of $119,610.

Forbes magazine's new 2024 rankings of the best and worst states for technology include the District, along with other states, but Washington, D.C., comes out on top.

The rankings analyzed seven factors, including employment rates, salaries, and expected growth rates.

According to Forbes, DC has a large population of IT professionals, with 7.06% of DC employees employed in technology-related fields, the highest percentage in the country. D.C. also has some of the highest-paid tech workers in the country, with an average annual salary of $119,610.

“While some states have higher average salaries for high-tech workers, Washington, D.C., fosters a highly favorable environment for high-tech workers,” Forbes said in its ranking. “Additionally, Washington, DC has shown strong GDP growth over the past five years.”

D.C. also has the highest percentage of female technology professionals at 31.6%, compared to 25.9% for all states.

Despite the San Francisco Bay Area's high-tech industry, California only ranks fourth on Forbes' list.Colorado and Washington State earn his No. 2 ranking behind D.C. and his No. 3 ranking.

The average annual salary for IT jobs in Virginia is $118,100, ranking No. 5 overall. Maryland's average annual salary is $117.500, ranking him 9th overall for tech careers.
