Decarbonization is an urgent priority for the shipbuilding and shipping industry. Companies are transitioning from traditional heavy oil to liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, and other new types of fuel. Modifying ship engines to run on alternative fuels is key to reducing carbon emissions.

Technology testing

Hitachi Zosen Marine Engines (HZME), a Hitachi Zosen subsidiary based in Kumamoto Prefecture, has partnered with MAN Energy Solutions, a major German industrial engine manufacturer. They are working on developing technology to convert engines that run on heavy oil to ones that run on green methanol. Both companies are also aiming to produce methanol engines in-house.

HZME is simultaneously developing conversion technology and producing engines. The company has already received an order from MAN for a test methanol engine. Demonstration tests for this technology are scheduled to be conducted at HZME's Ariake Plant in Kumamoto City from September to November 2024.
