HMM, a major South Korean shipping company, announced on Friday the adoption of an advanced AI image analysis solution, Deep Eyes, to strengthen safety management across its fleet.
Developed by GlobeAI, a startup founded by Chuo University professors, Deep Eyes integrates AI image analysis capabilities into CCTV systems.
The technology is designed to detect and alert managers to emergency situations such as fire, smoke, non-compliance with safety equipment and falls.
Despite their vast size, which is the size of three to four soccer fields, superships typically only accommodate a crew of 23 to 25 people.
Traditionally, shipping companies have relied on standard CCTV to monitor the interior and exterior of their vessels.
However, existing CCTV systems lack notification capabilities, creating challenges for effective safety management.
With the introduction of Deep Eyes, HMM hopes to be able to respond more quickly to safety incidents onboard ships and aim to prevent secondary accidents.
The system is scheduled to be installed on a 24,000 TEU class container ship, the world's largest, scheduled for next month.
It will cover 15 important areas, including the engine room and deck.
After a period of performance evaluation, HMM plans to consider applying the technology more broadly across its fleet.
