Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the state-run power company, has partnered with Kyrgyzstan on new energy projects such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission as it seeks cooperation in renewable energy projects with the country.

KEPCO President and CEO Kim Dong-cheol and Kyrgyzstan's Energy Minister Talaybek Iblayev met in Seoul on Thursday for new energy projects such as HVDC power transmission, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and advanced distribution management system (ADMS). signed a memorandum of cooperation. The Korean company said.

According to KEPCO, it plans to conduct a feasibility study on the possibility of using official development assistance (ODA) and work on related demonstration projects.

Kim said, “Kyrgyzstan and Korea Electric Power Co. aim to share the experience of growing the electric power business in both countries and cooperate in the entire new energy business, including HVDC, ADMS, and AMI.''

KEPCO will form a working group with the government, select joint development targets, and plan to expand the project in stages through feasibility studies and demonstration projects.

Korea-Kyrgyzstan energy cooperation

Kyrgyzstan, which provides more than 80% of its electricity needs from hydropower, is actively seeking partnerships with global energy companies to improve the quality of electricity in the country.

Ibraev said the Central Asian countries want to promote the development of joint projects in the power sector and establish a basis for sustainable improvement of cooperative relations between the two countries based on the agreement.

Separately, he met with South Korean Minister of Industry, Trade, and Resources Ahn Deok-geun and discussed the possibility of cooperation in areas such as renewable energy.

Mr. Ahn asked Ibrayev to provide active support so that Korean companies with excellent technology and experience in solar and wind power generation can enter Kyrgyzstan's renewable energy field in the future.
