LyondellBasell selects Emerson to modernize automation technology at olefin manufacturing plant

February 27, 2023 – Emerson, a global leader in software and technology, has been selected by multinational chemical company LyondellBasell to modernize the control systems and software at its Wesseling complex in Germany . The implementation of advanced automation technology will help enhance the operation of ethylene crackers and butadiene production plants. The Wesseling site is LyondellBasell's largest manufacturing facility in Europe. As part of a global modernization program, LyondellBasell is standardizing its control system technology. Emerson was selected for this project after demonstrating the ability to implement all hardware and software upgrades within a two-week turnaround time.


Emerson's DeltaV distributed control system and DeltaV Live software will be deployed to safely and efficiently operate the ethylene cracker, and the company's AMS Device Manager software will support the startup process and ongoing management of field instrumentation. Advanced automation solutions significantly reduce engineering time to implement control strategies aimed at increasing efficiency. DeltaV Live software simplifies plant management and provides a modern user interface that allows operators to identify problems early and maximize worker productivity.


A virtual DeltaV system will be used throughout the project to support development, testing, and training. Emerson's operator training solutions using his MIMIC process simulation software help operators become familiar with new control systems before start-up, minimizing the risk of potential problems and optimizing operator efficiency. Emerson's on-site engineers provide startup support and consult on implementing modern control strategies.
