Two senior Navy officials were recognized for their work advancing the development of torpedoes and other undersea warfare technology.
Jason Gomez, chief technology officer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, was awarded the Charles B. Martell David Bushnell Award for his work in the Contender, Underwater Express and Blue Wolf programs. Received the Lieutenant General Award.
The Contender program is transitioning to a new heavy torpedo program focused on long-range anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities. The success of the Underwater Express program led to the creation of the Blue Wolf program, which advances the capabilities of long-range torpedoes and other unmanned underwater vehicles.
Robert Koch, a senior engineer with the Newport Division, received the Lt. Gen. Charles E. Weekley Award for his research on acoustic and non-acoustic signature control techniques for underwater tactical stealth systems. Mr. Koch spent more than 30 years with the Newport Division.
The U.S. Navy said Koch was “widely recognized as a technical authority on tactical stealth systems in the USW, and distinguished himself for his outstanding technical contributions and leadership.”
