Onaway – Moran Iron Works (MIW), a leading manufacturing facility specializing in custom designed and engineered solutions, announced that it has been awarded another significant contract with SMS Group for the manufacture of two granulation tanks. Each of these basins weighs 164,000 pounds and measures 59 feet tall and 21 feet in diameter. The basin will serve as an integral part of the process delivered by SMS Group, in which blast furnace slag is granulated to provide a high-quality, low-carbon alternative to more traditional Portland-style cement to decarbonize the cement industry. The project, which began in January 2024, will use the high-wire corridor to move the basin to the Port of Rogers City, where it will be loaded onto barges and transported to its new base on the Great Lakes.
