The Ohio Department of Transportation announced in a press release on Saturday that new “smart lanes” will be installed on the northeast stretch of Interstate 275 in June. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, smart lanes “allow one additional lane of traffic on improved highway shoulders at certain times of the day to ease congestion and assist with accident management.” The press release said the new smart lanes “increase capacity and improve safety on the westbound lanes of the Interstate between rush hour and Reed-Hartman Highway.” The additional lanes will be most frequently open on weekdays between 6 and 9 a.m. and other times when heavy traffic is expected. In addition, while the lanes are open, the speed limit will be reduced from the usual 65 mph to 55 mph. The first smart lanes to open in Ohio were installed on Interstate 670 in Columbus. This marks the first time the Ohio Department of Transportation has deployed the technology in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The release states that the new SmartLane is ” [extra] “It will increase traffic capacity and improve safety in the westbound lanes of the interstate between Loveland Madeira Road and Reed-Hartman Highway during peak hours.”
The additional lanes will be open primarily on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and other times when traffic is expected to be heavy. While the lanes are open, the speed limit will also be reduced to 55 mph from the normal 65 mph.
The first SmartLane to open in Ohio is located along Interstate 670 in Columbus. This marks the first time the technology has been deployed by the Ohio Department of Transportation in the Greater Cincinnati area.
