You may remember the big AMD “scandal” that was talked about among gamers. Anti-Lag caused the anti-cheat system to issue a warning and take it as a positive. As a result, players were unintentionally banned from various games. But there were other problems for players too. Now they are back with Anti Lag 2 and want to give us a much better version.

A lot has changed. In contrast to the first version of Anti Lag, Anti Lag 2 is no longer an in-driver solution. Therefore, the feature becomes an in-game choice. This means that the anti-cheat system will no longer be able to false positives and ban players. But how does the whole anti-lag technology work?

This involves controlling the CPU speed to adapt to the GPU and reducing the amount of queued CPU work. This improves input-to-display response time and makes the game feel more responsive. This integration into the game communicates between the game code and the driver, which controls the CPU pace and improves image synchronization. Therefore, latency should be much lower and much improved than a solution inside the driver.

Valve's popular game Counter Strike 2 is the first game to benefit from the technology. Normally, an anti-lag version can be enabled in software, but it will be an in-game feature, so CS2 players will get it first. AMD says this will improve response times, which will make a noticeable difference.

To use this technology, the following technical specifications are required:

  • AMD Radeon™ RX 5000 series or better desktop and mobile graphics.
  • AMD Ryzen™ 6000 series processors with Radeon™ Graphics or higher (excluding some AMD Ryzen™ 7000 series processors with AMD GCN graphics architecture)

I'm looking forward to seeing how the new Anti Lag 2 technology works, it could play a crucial role especially in shooters. I'm intrigued.
