NTT and NTT Data, two of the world's leading technology and business solutions providers, will unveil new simulation technology at this year's Indianapolis 500, presented by Gainbridge. For the first time, this technology allows users to fully experience what it feels like to drive an NTT IndyCar Series car like the pros.
NTT is the parent company of NTT DATA, and the two companies are official technology partners of INDYCAR, the NTT IndyCar Series, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR Brickyard Weekend.
race like a pro
This year, the new race demonstration will leverage NTT Research's “embodied knowledge” technology and the vast amount of data that NTT and INDYCAR have collected over several years of collaboration. “Embodied Knowledge” powers the simulator, which blends physical sensations with digital innovation, allowing users to accurately experience trucks driven by professional drivers. This includes things like steering resistance, vibrations and forces on the pedals, gear changes, and tire traction when passing competitors.
NTT's “Embodied Knowledge” technology is being used in medical surgical training and coaching, sports fan experiences and more. Future applications include workforce training across retail, education and manufacturing, as well as enabling AI robots to learn how to move and react like humans to perform tasks from replenishing shelves to home care. This effort is part of NTT's investment of more than $16 billion annually in research and development to identify innovations that have a commercial impact for its customers.
“NTT DATA has pushed the boundaries of how technology can impact motorsports and helped us leverage vast amounts of data in forward-thinking and productive ways,” said Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Corporation, which owns INDYCAR and IMS. “NTT Smart Venue Technology has significantly enhanced the fan experience at IMS, and the impact is felt across our company, with real-time data from race control powering the INDYCAR app, powered by NTT DATA.”
“Every day, we work with some of the world's leading companies in healthcare, financial services, insurance, manufacturing, the public sector and other critical sectors, and few organizations generate such vast amounts of real-time data,” said Eric Clark, CEO of NTT DATA North America. “Our partnership with INDYCAR allows us to explore and pressure test our products in an intense, real-time setting. We use these learnings to help our clients transform their businesses, improve sustainability, leverage AI, improve customer experiences and expand their in-house innovation capabilities.”
SMART Venues enhance the fan experience
Fans at the Indianapolis 500 and other events at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be able to experience NTT DATA Smart Venue technology, sustainability solutions and live race data on the Pagoda Command displays. For example, AI-enabled optical detection technology improves security and traffic flow and, combined with digital ticketing, provides real-time and future predicted wait times at event gates and concessions, ensuring fans of the world's largest one-day sporting event can move through the venue as safely and efficiently as possible.
Data-Driven Race Insights
The INDYCAR app gives remote fans of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES real-time, data-driven race insights, including live scoring, in-car cameras and driver-to-team radio communications. Fans can get in on the action, from pit strategy to predicting the race winner. The app is available for download on the iOS App Store and Google Play.
