KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Knoxville Police Department took a deep dive into the latest in police technology.
KPD, like many other law enforcement agencies, could see the future of police training and technology.
Axon, a company that makes equipment for law enforcement officers, visited the Knoxville Public Safety Building on Friday to show off some of its new gadgets, including drones, body cameras and virtual reality training.
Virtual reality training helps police officers train for dangerous situations. KPD officials said the body cameras, which KPD has been using for several years, can also be useful for training purposes.
“We can look at them from a supervisor's perspective,” says Julia Small, KPD's technology manager. “Does this officer need training on how to better handle the situation? Can this example be used in other cases to train other people?”
Small said they are also considering using a database of surveillance cameras. It was displayed in a showcase. Companies will give local law enforcement agencies access to their surveillance camera footage in real time when a crime occurs, which can pose a huge threat to officer safety. be.
“With permission from the company, you can view the camera live on your way to the phone,” said Jim Price, account executive at Fusus by Axon Products. “This gives you real-time awareness so you know what you're about to do and have immediate access.”
Small said KPD is considering implementing the technology in the near future and plans to put it out for bid.
Friday's showcase included the Caryville Police Department, TEMA, and many other law enforcement agencies, so this technology could benefit law enforcement agencies throughout the region.
