RENO — Nevada students entering seventh or eighth grade in the fall semester will have the opportunity to attend an overnight math and technology camp on the University of Nevada, Reno campus from July 14-19.
Registration is open until April 22nd and space is limited.
This overnight camp for middle school students is designed to improve math skills, increase awareness of math-based careers, and introduce students to STEM fields.
The program's staff includes veteran teachers and pre-service or beginning teachers in the advanced division.

Role models and experts in the fields of mathematics and technology will also be featured as guest speakers during the sessions.
Instructors base their lessons on the Nevada Mathematics Standards set for the grade level that students enter in the fall. They employ research-based teaching methods approved by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, including a constructivist orientation to learning. Mathematics topics covered at camp include problem solving, geometry, spatial skills, data analysis, probability, and algebra.
This program allows students to experience university life in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Campers will stay in dormitories, creating an opportunity for Nevada students from outside the Reno-Sparks area to attend.
“The residential nature of the camp allows rural students exposure to a large college campus who may not otherwise have the opportunity at their age due to the state's geographical spread,” said Heather, assistant camp director.・Crawford Ferre said.
The camp will be led by education professor Linda Wiest and Nevada Department of Education education program specialist Heather Crawford Ferre.
Mr. Wiest has been the camp director since the camp's inception in 1998, and Mr. Crawford Ferre has been with the camp since 2007.
The cost is $600 and includes tuition, housing, meals and snacks, group recreation, camp T-shirts, math souvenirs, and other related expenses. Scholarships are available for participants with demonstrated financial need.
