WILLMAR — Ridgewater College will send one of its automotive technology students who won a gold medal at the state level to Atlanta, Georgia this June to compete in the national SkillsUSA competition.

Karina Rice of Ridgewater (Willmar) will compete in the national Skills USA competition after winning a gold medal in the automotive technology event at the state competition.

Carina Rice, a second-year Wilmar automotive technology student, won the automotive technology event at the annual Minnesota Skills USA competition held April 12 and 13 at St. Cloud Technical College, according to a news release. . The challenge had 13 students competing at her 13 auto repair stations.

Classmate Samuel Timmer, of Princeburg, took home a silver medal as a first-year student enrolled in post-secondary options.

“Carina graduated this semester and has worked hard to take advantage of every opportunity to learn about the automotive systems featured at Ridgewater,” Jonathan Fritton, Ridgewater automotive technology instructor, said in the release. Ta.

“This job as an automotive engineer is definitely my calling,” Rice said in a news release. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of my amazing instructors.”

Ridgewater College students from four technical colleges returned home with five winners and five runners-up, including first place for the high school manufacturing team consisting of Lester Prairie's Gibson Kirkvliet . Jake Hyles of Winthrop; and Kimball's Cole Lindbergh.

Hutchinson's teammate Dominic Garcia, Hutchinson's Gage Dyer and Buffalo's Kellan Stevens-Aldrich took second place in the collegiate manufacturing category.
