ST. George — A telematics device on a Jeep near Toquaville Falls alerted authorities to the rollover Tuesday afternoon.
Reaching the vehicle's registered owner was even more difficult due to its remote location to the southeast of Washington County's popular recreation area known for its waterfalls.
Washington County Search and Rescue Sergeant Darrell Cashin said dispatchers received a warning at 3:11 p.m. that a Jeep had rolled down near the falls.
“GPS confirmed southeast of the falls,'' Kassin said. “The Jeep's telematic alarm provided contact information for the registered owner, but she did not respond.”
Hurricane Valley Fire District medical personnel arrived at the scene and airlift was dispatched before contact could be made with the woman, Cashin said.
“Life Flight was actually being flown as a precautionary measure,” he said. “I stopped working on her because I got an email from her saying she was fine but needed a tow truck to pick up her car.”
Cassin noted that paramedics determined at the scene that the woman was in good health to refuse medical attention. She was later released after refusing her medical evacuation.
Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Iverson said the Jeep rolled down a hill multiple times, but the woman was able to drive away from the scene around 7:30 p.m.
After getting the vehicle back on the road with a winch provided by Winterton Wrecker, the woman was able to drive off the mountain.
“The female driver was driving from Toquaville Falls and was about to make a sharp turn when another vehicle approached,” Iverson said. “As she turned to miss the other car, the Jeep rolled down the hill. She complained of pain and stiffness, and there was damage to the Jeep as well, but she drove it down the mountain. ”
Iverson warned people to always use caution around sharp curves and drive slowly when traveling outdoors on remote and remote roads to avoid accidents.
Telematics devices, sometimes referred to as black boxes in the automotive industry, connect to a vehicle's computer system through a port under the dashboard.
SIM cards and modems may also be used by employers to track mileage, speed, and other metrics. Combining a SIM card and modem with a telematics device enables communication over cellular networks and adds stolen vehicle tracking and collision reporting capabilities.
According to the Public Safety Communications Employees Association, telematics in public safety terms refers to “electronic devices that provide paid location information and communications services.”
Advanced automatic crash notification is just one of many telematics features defined by the association.
“This is linked to a customer service center that makes calls, provides the service itself, and routes emergency calls to the appropriate emergency call center,” the Public Safety Communications Officers Association website states. Masu. “Data may also be received from our customer service center. Issues encountered may include reception, reliability, routing, handling, funding, etc.”
Other systems feature the Vehicular Emergency Data Set, an XML-based standard for reporting crash and medical data elements.
This report is based on statements from court records, police, or other responding parties and may not include the full scope of the findings.
