TEXARKANA, Texas — The Arctex Council of Governments' Regional Office on Aging wants to help seniors improve their technology skills with the help of local teens.
“Senior Serving Senior” is a technology class that helps high school students earn community service time by teaching them how to operate cell phones and computers.
This year's classes begin April 4th and will be held on Thursdays for four weeks at the ATCOG Building, 4808 Elizabeth Street, Texarkana, Texas.Morning classes are from 9am to 11am and afternoon classes are from 2pm to 4pm.
Angela Glass, a benefits counselor at the Area Agency on Aging, was inspired to start the program in 2023 after noticing her teenage daughter helping her grandfather with things on his cell phone. said.
“Everything is online now. Seniors may have to fill out applications online, and that worries them. Some people don't even have an email address,” Glass said. Told.
The agency reached out to local high schools and hired some students.
The course is open to anyone over the age of 60 living in the Texarkana area. Mr. Glass and Ms. Vonne Wilson, both benefits counselors, will teach the class.
In class, we will provide basic instruction on smartphones, tablets, and internet browsing. Seniors learn how to take photos with their cell phones and how to email photos.
One aspect is for seniors to practice safety and avoid cheating when using smartphones, computers, or tablets on the Internet. You can also use your device to order medications from a pharmacy, or learn how to order groceries and other items online for pickup in-store or home delivery.
Seniors will serve as positive role models for young people and help students earn community service hours for college applications. Students are encouraged to bring their own devices, but they will be provided in class if needed.
