Over the past few weeks, the Highland County Community Action Organization has had the opportunity to provide several “digital literacy” trainings to many senior citizens in Highland County. These trainings are held on weekdays, evenings, and on select weekends to allow as many people as possible to participate.

For those of you who can't attend these training sessions in person, I'd like to share some of the most “aha” training highlights with you. Moments in class so far.

“Long Hold”

Many of our training participants learned for the first time how to hold their finger on a phone application icon to display additional options and settings for the application. This was especially helpful when going through the process of finding and connecting to wireless internet. Hold your finger on his Wi-Fi icon on the phone and a list of available networks will appear.

“Horizontal swipe”

Many participants were learning for the first time about swiping their finger from the edge of the screen to the center to reveal additional settings. Especially for her Android users, this helped her quickly find her phone's settings screen and application list. It's so fun to see learning moments like this.

“Do not call the registry”

Many seniors talked about the number of sales and scam calls they receive every day. In class, we talked about national “do not call lists” that help remove personal phone numbers from marketing calling lists. Anyone who wants to add their phone number to the Do Not Call list can do so by visiting www.donotcall.gov. An email address is required to be added to the Do Not Call List. This is covered in the Technology Overview training.

The Highland County Community Engagement Department and the Highland County Commission are sponsoring a series of “Introduction to Technology” trainings for Highland County seniors. Upcoming training times and dates are as follows. No registration required, all events are free!
