Technology is making its way to Texas high school football…just not anywhere near the sidelines.
The University of Texas Interscholastic League (UIL), the governing body for high school athletics in Texas, has taken a major step toward integrating technology into the game of football. As part of the “rules passed” for the 2024 season, the integration of certain technologies is allowed in certain approved locations.
As part of the rule adaptation, UIL passed the following:
“Teams are permitted to use video and data technology (computers, tablets, iPads, smartphones, etc.) during games and during halftime breaks. Use of this technology is limited to coaching booths and locker rooms. Use of the sidelines and team areas during games is not permitted.
The rule further states that while match officials are not required to enforce the rule, they are expected to “report any known or suspected violation of this rule to the UIL in the match report.” It is stipulated that

Violation of the policy may result in forfeiture of the game according to UIL's policies.
