Who is the electric G-Wagen (2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology) for? Pricing has not been announced yet, but it will be expensive. Range has not yet been announced, but it got 494 miles in the European test cycle, and the EPA will likely rate it at around 250 miles. There doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference from the internal combustion or hybrid versions, but when it comes to turns, it's all spec.

According to Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Scheibe, no matter the powertrain, it has to be a G-Wagon first. This means off-road performance and iconic shape are prioritized. Scheibe says Mercedes could have changed the shape to make it more aerodynamic, but that would no longer be a G-Wagon.

Visually, the main differences between the electric G-Class and other models are an illuminated grille frame, a higher hoodline, and minor changes to improve aerodynamics (slightly modified A-pillar trim, small roof spoiler , rear fender flare air curtain). Inside the car, controls for performing EV-specific tricks, such as turning the car in place, are located where a differential lock button should be. that's it.

Scheibe acknowledged that there may be EVs that accelerate faster or charge faster, but the G-Class needs to maintain its four-wheel performance. In Europe, vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs) cannot be driven with a regular passenger car driver's license. Mercedes came close to that line with a curb weight of 7,716, including a 127-pound belly plate of carbon fiber composite that protects the battery pack from rocks. A short drive around the area reveals that the G-Class is a richer SUV than the Chevrolet Trax. Naturally, there are no spots of mud on any of them.

Mercedes believes maximum range is less important because most electric G Wagons will be the second or third car in a household. G Wagon owners don't use their G Wagon as their only means of transportation. For extended road trips, these owners have other options.

That may change in the future. The company is investing in charging networks in the U.S. and China that are operated by or partnered with Mercedes. It has already started in Europe. Mercedes realized that its network wasn't expanding fast enough to where its customers wanted to go. As an example, Scheibe cited a planned network along the Autobahn from major German cities to popular ski destination Austria.

Equipped with EQ technology, the G 580's target audience is described as being full of stars and influencers. The car appeared above a foggy lake pumped by a dry ice machine, and then Travis Scott climbed on top of the car and performed a mini-concert. A number of his classic G-Wagons were also on display, including his original 1979 model with Pouf's badge and one owned by Kendall Jenner.

Puch is now Magna Steyr, a company that operates and manufactures the G-Class primarily by hand in Graz, Austria. A Mercedes representative explained that he is the only robot in the entire factory.
