Smart Cockpit Reference Board – Design Overview
SANTA CLARA, Calif. and Kyoto, May 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ROHM Semiconductor and Nanjing SemiDrive Technology Ltd., China's largest smart cockpit SoC manufacturer, today jointly developed a smart cockpit reference design. announced. The design is primarily based on SemiDrive's X9M and X9E automotive SoCs and includes a PMIC, SerDes IC, LED driver IC, and other components from ROHM. A reference board based on this design is also available and consists of three boards: a core board, a SerDes board, and a display board.
In recent years, with the spread of automobile smart cockpits and ADAS, demand for in-vehicle electronics and parts has increased. The performance of PMICs and SerDes ICs, which are the core of automotive electronic systems, has a direct impact on the stability and efficiency of the entire system. Against this backdrop, ROHM's PMICs and SerDes ICs support improved stability during high-speed data transmission while achieving high integration of power supply blocks.
ROHM and SemiDrive have been exchanging technologies since 2019, particularly in the development of applications for vehicle cockpits. In 2022, the two companies entered into a strategic partnership to develop advanced technologies in the automotive field. As a result, ROHM components such as PMICs and SerDes ICs have been integrated into SemiDrive's X9H automotive SoC reference board. This reference board has since been adopted by many automakers to provide advanced functionality for cockpit and other vehicle applications.
This time, ROHM and SemiDrive have collaborated on the development of the REF66004 reference design, which is equipped with automotive SoCs X9M and X9E. In this way, the REF66004 is expected to further expand its application lineup, including popular models. In addition to the SerDes ICs used on the X9H reference board, ROHM also offers the BD96801Q12-C SoC PMIC and BD9SA01F80-C buck converter IC to drive the SoC, and the BD39031MUF-C general purpose PMIC for ADAS to supply power. I am. Connect to SerDes IC. This solution supports operation of up to three display projections and four ADAS cameras (surround-view cameras).
ROHM will continue to develop products for car infotainment systems that contribute to improving automobile safety and comfort.
Mr. Zhang Qiang, Chairman of Nanjing SemiDrive Technology Ltd., said:

SemiDrive is focused on providing core components such as in-vehicle SoCs and controllers for next-generation automotive electrical and electronic architectures. Our partnership with ROHM, which has a wide range of semiconductors for ADAS and cockpits, will greatly contribute to the realization of next-generation cockpit solutions. In particular, ROHM's SerDes ICs and PMICs, which utilize their unique analog technology, are key components of our reference designs. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with ROHM to provide innovative solutions in a wide range of automotive fields.”
Tetsuo Tateishi, Managing Executive Officer, ROHM Co., Ltd., in charge of R&D, IT, legal affairs, intellectual property, and LSI business
“We are pleased to have developed the reference design in collaboration with SemiDrive, which has an extensive track record in automotive SoCs. As ADAS evolves and cockpits become more multifunctional, the role of automotive analog semiconductors such as SerDes ICs and PMICs is becoming increasingly important. Meanwhile, the new PMIC that ROHM is providing for SoCs is a new concept in power supply ICs that can flexibly accommodate next-generation automotive power system configurations. We will continue to deepen our partnership with SemiDrive, deepen our understanding of next-generation cockpits, accelerate the development of a wide range of products, and contribute to the further evolution of the automotive field.”
REF66004 Reference design incorporating X9M, X9E, and ROHM products
The reference design, published on the ROHM website, combines SemiDrive's X9M and X9E SoCs for smart cockpits with ROHM's SoC and PMIC for ADAS, SerDes IC (for display/camera), LVDS splitter IC, and LED driver IC for automotive displays to provide a cockpit solution that can drive up to three screen projections and four cameras. In addition, ROHM's new SoC PMIC enables any output voltage setting and sequence control via the internal memory (one-time programmable memory), realizing a flexible and highly efficient power supply tailored to circuit requirements.
Reference boards based on this design are also available separately upon request and leverage SemiDrive's unique hardware virtualization capabilities to run multiple operating systems on a single SoC. At the same time, the hardware security management module allows the operating system to send commands to his SoC and GPU. By swapping out different SemiDrive SoCs with compatible pinouts, you can quickly change application specifications without changing the circuit.

term
-
SoC (System-on-a-Chip): A type of integrated circuit that incorporates a CPU (central processing unit), memory, interface, etc. on one board. Due to their high processing power, high power efficiency, and space savings, they are widely used in automotive, consumer, and industrial applications.
-
PMIC (Power Management IC): An IC that integrates multiple power supply systems and functions such as power management and sequence control on a single chip. By significantly reducing the space and development burden compared to conventional circuit configurations that use individual components (DC-DC converter ICs, LDOs, discrete devices, etc.), PMICs are becoming common in applications with multiple power supply systems in both the automotive and consumer sectors.
-
SerDes IC: A general term for ICs that are usually used in pairs to convert communication methods for high-speed data transmission. The serializer converts the data into a format that can be transmitted quickly and easily (parallel bus to serial bus), and the deserializer converts the transmitted data back to its original format (serial bus to parallel bus).
